How to install BackTrack 5 R3 in Vmware
BackTrack is a security-focused Linux distribution that is loaded with all the best Free .penetration testing applications available. It is based on Ubuntu Desktop. The latest edition is code-named Revolution, and the newest update-release – BackTrack 5 R3, was released just a few days ago.
It is distribution designed for penetration testers and other
security professionals, or those who want to mess with all the best
security and penetration testing applications the free software
community has to offer.
This is not a distribution you want to install just to check email
and perform other mundane Internet activities, though nothing stops you
from using it just for those purposes. It is made available for public
download as DVD installation images for both 32- and 64-bit
architectures. And there are installation images for KDE and the GNOME
desktop environments
Step 1: Type startx to get GUI and press Enter.
Step 2: A GUI (Graphical User Interface) will open and in the Desktop area there will be an “Install Backtrack” icon. Double-click to open it.
Step 3: Select your preferred language and click forward.
Step 4: A “where are you” box will appear. Select your Region and Time zone and then click Forward.
Step 5: In Keyboard layout leave everything as it is and click forward again.
Step 6: Next, in Prepare disk dialog box, leave everything as it is and click forward again.
Step 7: Her, the Ready to Install dialog box appears. Click Install and let it go. The installation will take some minutes (20min – 40min or more) so relax.
Step 8: After completion, “Installation Complete” dialog box will pop-up. Click “Restart Now” to save all the settings and restart the virtual machine.
Step 18: After the Reboot, a window will appear which will prompt you for you BT username and password. Type the following italic words in each of the the following prompts:
bt login : root
Password : toor
They are the default username and password but you can change them later if you want.
Final Step: Type startx as before to start the GUI. Here is your completely installed BackTrack. It is not like live-booted BackTrack using CD or USB drive where you will lose all you saved work in your next restart.
The tutorial was quite long, because I wanted all the important points to be clear for you. You can also install other Operation Systems like Ubuntu, Windows and even MAC OS in VMware.
